The degree Bachelor of Aviation is intended for aspiring career pilots, and focuses on inculcating professional values and qualities.

It is a professional degree delivered in a minimum of 3 years, structured around a set of core papers delivered over a period of a minimum of four semesters, during the first two years. The papers progressively introduce technical subjects, such as navigation, meteorology, air law, aerodynamics, aircraft performance, etc to the ATP level.

They also incorporate topics such as human factors, aviation psychology, crew resource management, threat and error management, etc. to a standard well in excess of the mandatory requirements for the issue of an Air Transport Pilot licence. Consequently, the students graduate with all of the examination credits for issue of an ATPL, i.e. a ‘frozen ATPL’.

Students then complete their degree in Year Three via the Flight Instruction Course option, or the Aviation Business Management option.

The training is delivered in Diamond DA40 single engine and DA42 twin engine aircraft equipped with Garmin 1000 avionics displays incorporating the latest technology such as moving map displays, terrain awareness warning systems and traffic avoidance systems.

The flight training syllabus is scenario based and designed to develop the necessary competencies and skills for operating advanced technology aircraft, while retaining the basic flying skills required of any professional pilot.

A special feature of the flight training programme in the School of Aviation is the Airline Bridging Course module at the end of the flight training phase. This is designed to prepare students for functioning as flight crew members in multi-crew air carrier operations.

Entry to this degree is competitive. Candidates who pass the initial ADAPT on-line pre-selection test proceed to stage two of the selection process where they complete further pilot aptitude assessments and an interview prior to gaining admission to the degree. Successful students must also have University Entrance and a current NZ CAA Class One Medical Certificate.

The School of Aviation also offers Bachelor of Aviation Management, Master of Aviation, and Doctoral programs in Aviation

Most of these programmes are available to international students through distance learning, and a number of industry professionals are currently enrolled.

The programmes can be completed in three years, full time, or up to six years, part time. Currently, there are a number of students completing their Doctoral studies in aviation at the School.
